August: A Month of Transition

We’re already a week into August, my favorite month! It’s also a month of transition for many. Kids go back to school in many states, and the hot, sunny mornings turn into cool, brisk ones. It’s my favorite month of the year, not only because it’s my birthday month but also because I love this lazy time when our feet are planted one foot in summer and one in fall. It’s been just long enough that a busy, regular routine feels right again, but you can still hang out on the deck with a fire and a good book in the evening.

I heard someone say, “August is the Sunday of the year.” They meant that it’s a time of dread. I disagree! If I spoke to that person, I would tell them it’s a time of hope. I’ve often said this time of year is a better time to make a new resolution, build a new habit, or recommit to a goal. I’ve already had two successful workout weeks, and although my nutrition isn’t perfectly on point, it’s not terrible either. I’m feeling like me again and looking forward to a regular routine. For me, it’s easier to stick to healthy habits when there is some regularity to them.

Instead of thinking that summer is almost over and being sad about that, think instead to what’s ahead. Prepare for the fall transition. Start making school supply lists and take the kids shopping for new clothes. Find some new recipes for those busy weeknights when the kids are at sports and music lessons, and you’re staying late at work or squeezing in a workout. Get ahead of holiday shopping or just start making lists. Organizing and planning can be wildly fun when it’s not rushed. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit on your deck or patio in the morning August sun, and start writing it down. Dream, plan, and look forward to the rest of 2026 and all it will bring.
