💪 What Is StrongLifting (And Why It Works So Well for Women)

Let’s talk about something that actually builds muscle, boosts confidence, and makes you feel strong from the inside out—without spending hours in the gym or doing endless cardio.

It’s called StrongLifting, a training method developed by Bret Contreras (also known as “The Glute Guy”), and it’s one of the most innovative and effective ways for women to train. I love it so much that I became certified in it—and I’ll share why in just a minute. But first, let’s break it down:

🔍 What Is StrongLifting?

StrongLifting is a hybrid of powerlifting and bodybuilding, explicitly designed to help women get stronger, more muscular, and more athletic—with a focus on form, progress, and physique enhancement (read: you’ll look as good as you feel).

The program emphasizes five main lifts:

  • Hip Thrust
  • Deadlift
  • Squat
  • Bench Press
  • Overhead Press

These movements work your entire body and build muscle where it matters—especially the glutes, hamstrings, back, and shoulders. StrongLifting combines heavy strength work with hypertrophy (muscle-building) accessory lifts so you’re not just strong—you’re sculpted.

🔥 Why It Works (Especially for Women)

Let’s bust a myth real quick: lifting heavy won’t make you bulky.
What it will do is:

  • Help you build lean muscle, especially in the glutes, legs, and arms
  • Boost metabolism and burn more fat at rest
  • Strengthen your bones, joints, and core stability (hi, menopause and mom life)
  • Improve your posture and movement patterns
  • Help you feel more powerful and confident inside and out

And because StrongLifting includes progressive overload and form-based training, it’s safe and sustainable even for beginners—no jumping, no circuits, no fluff. Just smart, proven programming that works.

🧠 The Mental and Emotional Shift

There’s something transformative about chasing strength instead of chasing smaller pants sizes. StrongLifting encourages you to track how much weight you can lift, not how little you weigh. It shifts the focus from shrinking your body to building it up—and that shift can be life-changing. You’ll start celebrating PRs (personal records), not calories burned. You’ll feel proud, not punished.

📝 Why I Became a Certified StrongLifting Coach

As a lifelong learner and someone who’s always been driven by curiosity, I am always searching for a method that would challenge me—not just physically, but mentally and professionally. I didn’t want another trendy workout or cookie-cutter certification. I wanted something rooted in science, something that aligned with my values of intentionality, integrity, and transformation. That’s when I found Bret Contreras and StrongLifting.

Who is Bret Contreras?

I’ve admired Bret’s work for years. His respect for biomechanics, deep understanding of how women respond to strength training, and his unwavering emphasis on glute strength (yes, the peach) resonated with me. But beyond the Instagram glutes, I saw something deeper: a methodology that teaches women how to lift—with power, confidence, and precision truly. I wanted to learn from the best how to cue the major lifts properly—not just so I could get stronger, but so I could help other women do the same without fear, injury, or intimidation.

As a Catholic mom who wears about 17 hats at once, I know how hard it is to prioritize your own strength. That’s why StrongLifting felt like such a perfect fit for my coaching philosophy. It’s not about chasing smaller. It’s about building stronger—stronger bodies, stronger minds, and stronger spirits. Stronglifting honors the gift of your body and discovering what it’s capable of when you treat training as stewardship, not punishment.

Personally, StrongLifting has transformed me. I’ve become more physically resilient and confident in my own lifts. I’ve started moving through life with better posture, more energy, and the quiet confidence that comes from showing up consistently—even on the days it’s hard. Mentally, it’s helped me ditch the all-or-nothing mindset and embrace the beauty of progression. Spiritually, it’s reminded me that discipline is a form of love—a way to care for the temple God has given me, one rep at a time.
